JustBetween Lovers is a story of love, life, and tragedy. Shot like a big budget Hollywood Indie film, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the soundtrack keeps the viewer on their toes, one minute cute and quaint, the other minute full of echoing, melancholy strings. My Review Just Between Lovers also known as Rain or Shine is a poignant and beautifully told story about the aftermath of a shopping mall collapse that killed 48 people. The shopping mall in the drama was made up, but it was patterned off of real-life event. In 1995, the Sampoong Department Store in Seoul collapsed killing 502 people and injuring 937. The cause was greed and corruption that lead to substandard materials being used, bad engineering design, pay offs to look the other way and disregard for public safety to make money. Just Between Lovers is set 10 years after the shopping mall collapse. We are introduced to Lee Kang Doo played by2PMs Lee Jun Ho and Ha Moon Soo played by Won Jin Ah who both were victims of the collapse and they both lost family members. Weighted down by their past trauma, they hold guilt for surviving and they still suffer PTSD and flashbacks. Almost every episode has a flashback which reveals more of what happened. At times it can be heavy and a little much, but I think the writers are also trying to get us to feel the pain and constant struggle Moon Soo and Kang Doo face. They can’t ever turn off the images that continue to play in their head, so we experience it with them too. Like in real life, the drama depicts how all the characters that experienced trauma react in different ways. Moon Soo became an architect model maker where she helps to make sure buildings are secure and safe. Her parents separated and her mom has become an alcoholic over the loss of her other daughter, her dad has closed off his emotions and stays quiet. The head architect also linked to the collapse goes beyond the call for safety measures. Kang Doo fell into poverty and had to hustle on the streets to survive. He found a family in “granny” and “noona” and his adorable neighbor Sang Man, who had some type of disability. The pace of the drama may feel a little slow because of the melancholy tone, but the story is actually always progressing. It was only maybe the last 3 episodes I felt it dragging a little when they threw in some extra angst. The writers did a fantastic job of showing the journey of Moon Soo and Kang Doo as they help to heal each other’s pain, learn to lean on one another and accept that they are survivors and they owe it to themselves to live life. Everything they dealt with just seemed so raw and real life. Both their acting was great. I previously saw Won Jin Ah in Melting Me Softly, which was pretty darn horrible and she didn’t impress me, but she was really good in this. I’m not too familiar with Kpop so I didn’t realize that Jun Ho was an idol from 2PM until I finished watching. I thought he was absolutely superb. He had the range of emotions from angry with walls up, vulnerable and crying, angsty, steadfast and a shoulder to lean on, cute and flirty. He did such a great job with the complex emotions that Kang Doo was always experiencing. I’m excited to find out he just got released from the military and we hopefully will see him again soon! My other favorite character was granny. She was a no nonsense grumpy on the surface ahjumma with a huge heart and softness underneath. She took in Kang Doo as her own and nurtured and loved him in her own way. I loved all their scenes together and all her words of wisdom made me smile in how brutally honest she was. Some of her lines were very thought provoking too, for example when she talked about poverty being the biggest killer of people. The lack of access to healthy care or taking dangerous jobs in order to make money all contribute to the poor dying. Just Between Lovers is a contemplative, slice of life drama that shows the pain and healing that occurs after a tragedy. The writing is beautiful and thought provoking, the characters are all so well developed and complex. The acting is heartfelt and raw. It is also a story about the importance of family and friendships. You can’t go it alone and it’s okay to lean on others when you need help. It’s okay to live and survive and to have hope. Final Opinion Must See Story Acting/Cast Music Rewatch Value Just Between Lovers is such an incredible Korean drama. I was always looking forward to the next episode and wishing it wasn't coming to an end. This is now my favourite drama and one that would never forget. I would say that the story line really hit home to me, it made me feel all kind of emotions but it never got confusing. This also was a realistic drama sharing the story of a tragic event that affected not only the two main characters but the support roles and this was also why i love this drama so much and it is worth rewatching as it shows how they dealt with their own hardships and how each one is connected one way or another. I really don't see the characters being played by other actors, I truly believe that the cast was chosen perfectly and a lot of hard effort was put in by the staff and cast. I would say that the songs that were played through out the series gave that finally touch and really made an huge impact as it gave out all the feels to me as the this drama gives you that realisation about life, if what you are doing is making you happy and creating a better you. I cant really write a long review but I would definitely recommend this drama to everyone. It is a MUST WATCH. I really don't think this one is the type to drop or not be interested wouldn't be surprise if Just Between Lovers win awards this year, I am totally rooting for them. Was this review helpful to you? I watched two K-dramas in the span of two weeks honestly less and I can safely say that I need to stop watching tragic dramas. For my health. I just wanted to talk about the difference between these dramas that were similar in genre but different in the way that they left me feeling. Just between lovers is the type of drama that you should never suggest to someone that you love dearly. Unless if you love seeing the people that you love breaking down because of the many scenes of tragic drama land. They’ll cry. They’ll contemplate their life choices. They will perish. Slightly dramatic, but Just between lovers is a tragic drama. Rated 9 out of 10 for tragedy and 3 for its comedy scenes. As you can see, this drama is very intense. There are times when it gets cute and you want to cry, for once, because you are happy, but then there are those times where you can feel your heart slowly ascending into deep fiery pits never to be seen again. You cry, more than necessary for a K-drama. The actors were so good that in every scene that they were happy or sad their emotions would be easily portrayed. You could feel every smile, every tear and all heart stopping moments. This was one of the best dramas that I have ever watched. The whole plotline evolved around a building that collapsed 13 years ago. They tell us about how the survivors are doing and how the victim’s families are holding on. They also tell us the story about the company that was responsible for the main collapse and how they are a decade later. They all have their own scars for having lost a loved one and having experienced something as terrible as the darkness of a fallen building. They were in there for days, others even losing hope, others dying. But mostly, they all had regrets about that day and wished that they would change the outcome. This drama just showed me how different people react to traumatic situations than others. It showed me that it is never empathy unless if the person has actually experience the situation themselves. I realised that others will easily hide their scars, while others will get to a point where they can no longer bear the burden of remembering. Just thinking about it now I can feel my heart constricting as I remember all of the feelings I went through during the whole drama. I was sad. I was happy. A man Junho lost his father as well as severely injured his leg and a woman Won Jin Ah lost her little sister. As they work on a new building project, they struggle to heal old wounds as they fall in love. Junho plays Lee Kang Doo. Kang Doo lost everything because of the mall collapse. His father, his dreams, and the chance at a normal life. Now he struggles to get by while living in debt. His situation is just bleak. He also deals with some severe Post Traumatic Stress from the accident. He’s a very rough around the edges and straight forward guy. But watching him deal with traumatic memories that brought him so much pain and so many tears ripped my heart out. And honestly, he’s one of those people that one bad thing after another just keeps happening to. He just can’t catch a break in life! It was so incredibly sad to see. And Junho did absolutely wonderful at portraying this character and capturing the intensity of his pain. Won Jin Ah is Ha Moon Soo. After her little sister was killed in the accident, her family never fully recovered. And she deals with survivors guilt for living when her sister didn’t. The accident also led her down a career path building models for new buildings to identify any problems. This ultimately leads her to cross paths with Kang Doo. Then we have Lee Ki Woo as Seo Joo Won. Joo Won’s life was also changed by the mall collapse. As an architect at the company Moon Soo works for, he’s always working to prevent a similar tragedy to the one in the past. On the outside, he seems to have everything, but underneath that he is a lonely man who also struggles with the past. I was a bit disappointed with how his character was handled. I was really interested in his story, and he was an important part of the first half of the drama. But he kind of falls to the wayside in the second half, and his story sort of peters out. Supporting characters ended up with much bigger roles than he did. So I was a bit let down that he wasn’t given more attention. Just Between Lovers is a sad but beautiful story. The script was well thought out with all scenes and character interactions having importance. The cinematography is gorgeous in this drama. So many shots beautifully depict the landscape as well as the emotional weight of the character’s interactions. The wonderful soundtrack also enhances this. The songs create a hauntingly bittersweet tone that really tugged at my heartstrings. Just Between Lovers is sort of a slow burn kind of drama. It takes a few episodes to really get everything set up and then it carefully makes it’s way through the story. Despite having a slower feel to it, it was paced really well. There were some times during the latter third that I found a bit draggy, but overall the drama is very engaging. The love story between Gang Doo and Moon Soo had a very natural progression. Rather than any big theatrics, it developed organically in a way that made each subtle development feel important. These are two people that are in immense pain, and they feel alone in their struggles. But connecting with each allows them to explore their shared connection and understand that they are not alone in their pain. They each have a lot of issues to work through both personally and as a couple, but their relationship is the definition of a healing one. Now almost everyone in this drama is experiencing varying levels of misery. Everyone has problems and most are struggling to get through them. Something I really appreciated with this drama was how it handled the topic of past trauma. It doesn’t sugar coat things. Many people expect victims of trauma to just get over it and move on. But this drama shows that these experiences have lifelong effects. Losing a loved one will always leave a hole in your heart. Traumatic memories of pain and suffering can haunt you and cause you physical pain throughout your life. You also never fully understand someone else’s pain. And even when people do begin to heal, things will never be completely okay again. But for the characters in the drama, it meant that they needed to work even harder to be happy. It was all portrayed so achingly true to life. Just Between Lovers told it’s story beautifully. It’s depiction of trauma and healing was heartachingly real. But even in the midst of tragedy, life does goes on. And those struggling need others to reach out to them and show them that they are not alone. They may not be able to heal all their wounds, but it’s better to have someone to share that pain with and to ease the burden if only by a small amount.
